A tooth gap — or “diastema” — between the two front teeth can look cute on a youngster, but most adults prefer for their teeth to align nicely side-by-side.
When there’s a space between your two front teeth and it causes so much embarrassment that you don’t even like to smile in photographs, or you feel that it impacts your professional appearance, it’s time to talk to Tsawwassen cosmetic dentist, Dr. Jan Roberts, at Roberts Dental & Facial Rejuvenation to find out how we can help.
Treating a Tooth Gap: Cover Small Spaces with Bonding or Veneers
If your teeth are healthy but have a significant gap between them, bonding or porcelain veneers are an ideal “quick fix” for a tooth gap. Bonding is preferred for smaller areas or only one tooth, as it is applied and hand shaped by our Tsawwassen cosmetic dentist.
For larger gaps or tooth shape issues, veneers are generally the best choice. Veneers mask the healthy tooth behind it, but recreate the size and contour of the tooth that it’s bonded against.
Treating a Tooth Gap: Use Porcelain Crowns to Reconstruct Tooth Anatomy
Naturally smaller teeth may inadvertently create gaps between them, because of their unproportioned size. Or, a tooth could be physically smaller because of past trauma, or decay. Covering the affected teeth with custom porcelain crowns restores a fuller appearance while also enhancing the function of those teeth. Keep in mind that the crowns will usually need to be completed in pairs, so that the teeth match one another.
The only instances where bonding, veneers, or crowns would not be ideal is if the space was extremely large. Adding too much width to a tooth would cause it to look unnatural and draw unwanted attention to the area.
When that’s the case, you’re left with one of the next two choices:
Treating a Tooth Gap: Bring the Teeth Closer Together
Orthodontic alignment can close spaces and gaps between your teeth, without the need to cover them with an unnecessary restoration. Our Tsawwassen dentist chooses to use Invisalign or Clear Aligners, clear alignment tray systems that reposition teeth without the need for fixed braces. Invisalign or Clear Aligners are a perfect choice for addressing overall tooth misalignment, including gaps between teeth. If the space is related to overactive muscular tissues, clipping them prior to beginning Invisalign could reduce the time spent in treatment.
Treating a Tooth Gap: Replace Missing Teeth
Some gaps or diastema are caused by the space left after a tooth has been extracted. Whether it’s the same place the previous tooth once stood, or it’s caused by teeth shifting now that there’s more room in the arch, your entire bite can be affected by one missing tooth.
Our Tsawwassen dentist usually recommends dental implants for replacing missing teeth. Implants are biocompatible and the closest thing to a natural tooth. If significant shifting has taken place, you may need to orthodontically align the adjacent teeth before there is room for the implant to be installed.
