Are you finally getting porcelain veneers? Having your natural smile covered with the porcelain shell can be a tremendous experience. Cosmetic veneers are able to cover all manner of aesthetic flaws in your teeth. From spacing to crooked or misshapen teeth, porcelain veneers often give people the confidence to smile again.
But have you ever wondered what happens between your two appointments while getting veneers? Tsawwassen cosmetic dentist Dr. Roberts helps you take a brief look behind the curtain!
Porcelain Veneers: Your First Consultation
During your first appointment for porcelain veneers, you’ll pick a “style” of teeth that you like. You want ones that will look natural for your particular smile anatomy. From the size and shape to the colour and hue, you’ll have input on just about every aspect of what your new smile will look like. We may even take an impression so that you can preview a diagnostic model of your proposed veneer design.
Your First Treatment Appointment
Dr. Jan Roberts will prepare your enamel, and then take an impression of your bite. The impression is used to get exact measurements for your teeth. We’ll place temporary veneers on your teeth to protect them between appointments, so you can eat and drink without any trouble. You may notice an increased sensitivity to heat and cold while you wear them. This sensitivity is due to the tooth structure being modified, so using a sensitivity-blend toothpaste can be helpful.
Models of your bite are sent to our lab, where your customized permanent veneers will be hand designed.
In Between Your Appointments
Our lab will craft the permanent set of porcelain veneers to go over your teeth, matching the specifications you’ve asked for. In about two weeks, you’ll come in to have the veneers placed. In the meantime, while you are eating and drinking with your temporary veneers, avoid hard or crunchy foods and drinks that can leave stains.
Final Appointment and Placement of Your Porcelain Veneers
Once your porcelain veneers are ready, Dr. Roberts bonds them to your teeth and your veneers will be set! If you feel a little anxious about the process, our NuCalm Relaxation system is available to help you feel more at ease throughout this makeover process. There’s no recovery time; once your porcelain veneers are set, you’ll be able to eat and drink normally. As soon as you look into the mirror, you’ll see a brand new smile looking back at you!
Living with Porcelain Veneers
Once your porcelain veneers are placed, they become a permanent part of your smile, but by permanent, we actually mean 10-15 years. Take good care of your veneers: brush and floss regularly, rinse, and don’t use your teeth as tools. To help protect your investment, consider getting a night guard if you grind your teeth to prevent excessive wear to the porcelain.
